Here, You will find reviews of software (mostly utilities) that I find usefull. The diference between this list and other similar lists is that I will give You references ONLY to free software - and by the term "free", I don't mean all those shareware-30-days-evaluation programs that stop working after trial period. I mean FREE stuff (and there's loads of it, You just need to find it) that doesn't work for 30 days only (though, some is shareware and should be registered if You continue to use it longer). (I expect to sort the list in categories a bit later, when it grows enough). So, here we go..

Program Name Description Location
CPU Monitor v1.3b1 Handy little tray-utility that displays bar with CPU usage at Your system-tray.
Desktop Informant Cool looking utility that displays comics-like-dialogbox when you point over any icon (on desktop or explorer)
Remote Desktop 32 If You're network administrator (as I am) You're probably gonna love this program! It allows You to connect to remote computers in the Windows network and control them remotely. This is actualy 30-day evaluation version, but it doesn't expire after 30 days.
HexEdit Binary/Hex-Editor. If You like to poke around your system and change binary files - this is for You.
NotePad+ v.1.11 Windows Notepad replacement. Cool! Opens several files, unlimited size, faster, font options, etc. A must have!
Document Explorer V2.0 ComponentSoftware RCS (CS-RCS) is a powerful and robust document revision control solution. CS-RCS monitors changes made in files that are accessed by standalone or networked workstations. This version works fine for standalone computers only - for workgroups You have to register - but I find tis an indispensable tool even on single computer; for instance when You're changing program source code (or HTML/javascript, etc.). Based on the widely used GNU RCS, it is fully integrated with Windows 95 and Windows NT.
IrfanView 32 Great file viewer. Forget that stupid QuickView (that sits on Your taskbar-tray and eats RAM and CPU cycles). Most of us need only graphics-file viewer anyway. This is really a cool program, a must have - with slideshow and full screen display.
MemStatus 1.1 Wonder which program stole alll Your RAM? How much swap file is in use and what's Your memory load after You lounch Word, Excel and Navigator stimultaniously? This program will graphically display all RAM info, and it is NOT a resident program!!!
R-Name-it v2.85 Ever needed to raname 768 files? And You had to do it by hand? Brrrrrr... This program automaticly renames bulks of files for You. I don't get it how I could have lived without this program!
VMerge v1.2732 Visual Merge compares files and let's You merge them for differences. This evaluation version runs only 100 times - but don't worry; all You have to do is erase it and reinstall it for another 100 and another 100 and... Well, a nice program anyway. x
NeoPlanet You want a modern browser with chanels but IE4 or Navigator are too big and slow for everyday "fast-surfing"? This is a browser for You. Neat interface. Requires that You have IE installed.
Paint Shop Pro v4.12 The best shareware raster-graphics (paint) program available. 30-day evaluation, but with no timelimit
Internet Explorer v4
FrontPage Express
Outlook Express
  • I suppose You already have this one, but just in case... even if You're hardcore Netscape user, this one is worth downloading - it's a huge and great program, and it's free!!!
  • Bundled with IE4. Great Web-page design program - design Your page with it, then tune-it manualy.
  • Bundled with IE4. Greatest E-mail program: It's from Microsoft and it's free.
Netscape Communicator 4.05 The greatest browser just got better and cheaper - it's free!!! If You don't have this edition, download it now!
MultiDial v1.1 Great dial-up tool. If Your Internet provider has several phone numbers or You access the Internet from several accounts or provoders - this is a program for You. x
StartEd v2.0 Did You ever get annoyed by that start-up program which always loads with Windows, but You can;t seem to find it in "Startup" items? This program will list all programs that start from Your registry rather than from the start-up menu, where You can edit or delete them. A must have.
AtomTime v1.4a Adjust Your computer-clock according to Atomic clock server. Simple to use and usefull utility.
GifClean32 v2.4c You got a great animated GIF and would like to put it on Your Web site, but it contains comment from the author. Or, you have hundreds of GIFs on Your web site, and each has a comment with is totaly useless and just wastes space and lengths download. Remove all comments with this handy utility.
Phantom 0.39 Phantom is a background E-mail application that runs from the Win95 taskbar icontray. Phantom checks any POP3 compliant server at specified intervals for waiting e-mail. Phantom will notifiy you with an audio cue and with a change in icon in the icontray, as well as displaying the total number of messages when the mouse passes over the icon in the taskbar tray. You can then display the headers and delete messages on the servers that you don't want. Phantom can be configured to check multiple servers and multiple e-mail accounts. Spam protection and filtration have also been added for the latest version. Currently Phantom is freeware and only runs on Win95.
MapMaker32 Up until recently, image mapping was handled by the web server. Usually people used a tool to create the image map for the web server. Unfortunately, not all of use have ready access to the web server of our ISP. With the advent of newer versions of web browsers, we have the capability to create "Client Side Image Maps". These maps are contained in web pages that WE create and contain information regarding the selection rectangles and the web page (URL) to bring up
when we click the left mouse button within a selection. Setting up the map by hand is almost an impossible feat, as relative addressing from the top left of the image is used. MapMaker32 provides an easy way to create client side image maps.
